I crocheted a black Berlin Hat as a custom order for our Etsy shop. A customer approached us about making a Berlin Hat for her, but using black merino yarn. Of course we could accept!

Black Berlin Hat

The Berlin Hat was our first crochet pattern we published, and it’s also a best seller in both our Etsy and Ravelry shops.

We named the hat after the beautiful but gritty city Berlin, which we used to visit every summer as children. After a lot of testing, we found that the Berlin Hat pattern works best in a tonal-dyed yarn, such as Mineville Wool Project DK, Sweet Paprika Designs Minuet, or Blue Brick Escarpment DK. However, it also looks great in a solid, like the black hat pictured here.

The Berlin Hat pattern includes multiple sizes, so there are directions to fit toddlers, children, and adults. The adult pattern has options for either a slouchy fit or a closer beanie/toque fit.

Depending on the size and fit, the hat requires about one skein of DK weight yarn. After a lot of work, editing, resizing, testing, and editing again, I am proud of the pattern! Since crochet isn’t normally stretchy, I tried to mimic the look of knitting using slip stitches. Worked sideways, you can easily adapt the pattern to fit your own head.

This was the first time making something completely in solid black yarn. I now understand why knitters and crocheters are reluctant to do so! The yarn is so dark so that I could only crochet during the day. Even with a lamp next to me, working in the evenings was too hard on my eyes. Nevertheless, I was still able to finish this hat in just over a week.

Depending on the size and fit, the hat requires about one skein of DK weight yarn, depending on the size of the skein, of course. This hat used two full skeins of Estelle Yarns Superwash Merino DK, or 250 m. After a lot of work, editing, resizing, testing, and editing again, I am proud of the pattern! Since crochet isn’t normally stretchy, I tried to mimic the look of knitting using slip stitches. Worked sideways, you can easily adapt the pattern to fit your own head.

You can buy other finished Berlin Hats in our Etsy shop here, in different sizes and colours.

You can also buy the Berlin Hat pattern from our Etsy and Ravelry shops if you want to make one for yourself!
