DIY: Crochet Berlin Hat by Kiku Corner

We’d like to introduce the Berlin Hat, our first ever crochet pattern published on Ravelry and our Etsy store!

We named the hat after the beautiful but gritty city Berlin, which we used to visit every summer as children. After a lot of testing, we found that the Berlin Hat pattern works best in a tonal-dyed yarn, such as Mineville Wool Project DK, Sweet Paprika Designs Minuet, or Blue Brick Escarpment DK. The main pattern photo uses one skein of Blue Brick Escarpment DK in Aster.

The Berlin Hat pattern is multi-sized, so there are directions to fit toddlers, children, and adults. The adult pattern has options for either a slouchy fit or a closer beanie/toque fit.

We used one skein of Sweet Paprika Designs Minuet in Graphite for the grey Berlin Hat shown above. It shows the adult slouchy fit.

Conversely, the photos above show the smaller adult beanie fit. We used one skein of Valentina Colour Works Merino DK in Zinfandel.  This finished hat is available for purchase in our Etsy store.

Depending on the size and fit, the hat requires about one skein of DK weight yarn. After a lot of work, editing, resizing, testing, and editing again, I am proud of the pattern! Since crochet isn’t normally stretchy, I tried to mimic the look of knitting using slip stitches. Worked sideways, you can easily adapt the pattern to fit your own head.
