Meet our newest knit design: the Burlington Hat!

The Burlington Hat uses aran weight yarn and is knit entirely in mistake rib. This stitch makes the hat extremely stretchy and squishy, so each knit size will fit many sizes of heads. It is also completely reversible.

We’ve designed this hat for three sizes: Toddler-Child, Teen-Adult Small, and Adult Large. The variation is because the stitch pattern is very stretchy, and the Toddler-Child hat fits my one-year-old as well as a six-year-old. I’ve designed the hat to have a fold-up brim to add extra warmth to the ears. This is important for keeping toasty warm during Canadian winters! However, if you prefer no fold-up brim, it’s easy to alter. Really short watchcap hats are quite trendy right now, so you can knit this hat very short so that it sits on the crown of your head, just above the ears.

We like to name our designs after cities; this one is named after Burlington, Ontario. I knit the majority of our samples while visiting Ryan’s parents in Burlington, so it was an obvious choice. Burlington is a small lakeside suburban city in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and we visit occasionally.

The pattern file contains written instructions as well as a chart. I prefer knitting from charts but if you find written instructions easier to follow, then we’ve included those too. This is especially important when working the decreases of the crown.

I knit these sample hats using DROPS Big Merino in the Olive colourway. However, you could use any number of aran-weight yarns, such as Rowan Superfine Merino Aran, Artfil Sweater, Cascade Yarns Longwood Aran, and Debbie Bliss Rialto Aran. This hat would look lovely in any solid or tonal colour, but I would caution against using variegated yarn. Variegated yarns, while lovely, may obscure the stitch pattern and make the hat look messy or untidy. However, that’s just my personal preference, so you do you.

Due to the rather simple stitch design, this hat makes a great mindless knit. The stitch pattern is just an offset 2×2 rib, so you can easily knit while commuting, watching TV, or while minding a toddler. The only place that takes a bit of concentration is working the decreases.

You can get the Burlington Hat pattern on Ravelry or our Etsy shop here.
