The Orange Frida Headband for Toddlers is a scrap-busting project that knits up quickly. This is leftover yarn from my Orange Oak Crest Hat and the headband makes an easy last-minute gift.
This is the third Frida Headband featured here on Kiku Corner. We definitely love this free pattern by Emilie Luis because it is so easy and makes a double layered (warm!) headband. The good thing about headbands is that they use small amounts of yarn. You might not have enough of a beautiful yarn left over to knit a hat, scarf, or sweater. However, headbands just require a few hundred metres of yarn. And headbands for babies and toddlers will use even less!
This small project took a few months for me to knit even though I used a heavy yarn. It was a backup project for the times I was too tired to knit something complicated. It would also make a great travel project, but where would I travel these days?
Creating the twist turned out to be rather simple and ingenious. Once finished, you can choose to wear the twisted part of the headband in the front, or the back. I find having the twisted, cinched part fits nicely under your hair on the back of your head. Your choice!
The yarn is Cascade 220, a worsted weight wool by Cascade Yarns. I found this particular skein at a Toronto yard sales a few years ago. This project used the remainder of the skein, about 40% or 80 metres. It just fits Kenji, who is approximately 10 months in these photos. He has a rather large head, so this headband should also fit older toddlers.
Even though the yarn is heavier than in the original pattern, I still cast on the same number of stitches. This made a much thicker headband than the original pattern. I wasn’t sure Kenji would like wearing the Orange Frida Headband for Toddlers but during the photo shoot he didn’t try to pull it off once!
You can buy this cozy orange headband for your toddler from our Etsy shop here.

We love knitting headbands! Check out some of the other headbands that we have made:
So adorable!! When the weather is not quite cold enough for a knit hat, the headband keeps the baby’s ears warm. Attractive color, too.
