DIY: Knit Red Queensland Beach Headband by Fiona Alice

This Red Queensland Beach Headband is from Fiona Alice’s book called Take Heart published by Pom Pom Press. This lovely book incorporates Fiona’s journey from Nova Scotia to London, all shot on the beach in Wales. There are 11 patterns for accessories in Take Heart, and I plan to knit most of them (one day). The Red Queensland Beach Headband is a good start.

Similar to the cover photo of Take Heart, I chose to knit the headband in a rich red wool from SweetGeorgia. Its Superwash Worsted makes this a really quick project and the repeated eight row chart produces fat and ornate cables that resemble little hearts. The formation of the cables on the outer edges produces a neat little border.

The Red Queensland Beach Headband starts with a provisional crochet cast on. Next comes the completion of the headband’s body and it is finished using the kitchener stitch. I am not a fan of this finishing in anything but stockinette stitch, so I made an alteration and used some extra yarn to wrap the cast on edge. As a result, there a little waist, which fits perfectly under ponytails.

In the photos I am wearing the headband in two different ways. The first is on top of my hair, while the second one is tucked underneath. Both of these methods are comfortable and warm, and depend on your preference.

This is the third knit headband featured here on Kiku Corner, and I plan to make more. It is also great stash buster as it used approximately half of the SweetGeorgia skein. Additionally, it makes a cute little travel project.
