DIY: Knit Clover Hat and Free Pattern by Susan B. Anderson in Lagoon

The Clover Hat by Susan B. Anderson in Lagoon is a free pattern published by the Barrett Wool Co. One skein of worsted weight wool makes an adult and a matching baby’s hat.

The Clover Hat introduces the K1long stitch, which is an extra long stitch that jumps two rows down to create visual interest. The placement of the K1long in this hat creates a repeating leaf-like pattern.

This hat is my first attempt at one of Susan B. Anderson’s patterns. She is a designer who makes the cute little knit animals in most of the Making Magazine’s issues.

This is one of may free patterns featured here on Kiku Corner. Although we love supporting knitwear designers, we also enjoy trying the many free patterns available. It’s a great way to test out a designer’s style before purchasing their other patterns.

There is one size for this hat, which produces a slouchy fit for a small to medium head and a close fit for a large head. The pattern uses a regular yarn pom pom for the baby hat and a faux fur pom pom for the adult version. I decided to omit the pom for this project because I don’t think it needed the extra decoration.
