This black chocolate bundt cake uses black cocoa powder in the cake and the glaze, so it turns out black as night!

Black Chocolate Bundt Cake

Black cocoa powder is the intensely dark cocoa powder that is used to make Oreos. It has become more common recently; I get mine from Bulk Barn.

This cake is really easy to whip up; you don’t even need an electric mixer! The black chocolate bundt cake uses melted butter, so you can mix everything together by hand with a whisk. If you don’t have yogurt, you can substitute it with sour cream or plain kefir. Try using a flavoured yogurt, like cappuccino or raspberry for a boost of complementary flavour! If you decide you want a more mocha-flavoured cake, use strong brewed coffee instead of the water in the cake batter.

Don’t worry that the cake won’t rise; the baking soda and yogurt react to make this cake light, fluffy, and very moist.

When making the glaze, start by adding just 3 Tbsp of cream. You don’t want the glaze to be too runny! It should seem very thick and should ooze slowly down the side of the cake. I love this glaze recipe because it uses cocoa powder; sometimes I don’t have solid chocolate that many recipes call for.

Serve this cake plain with a cup of tea or coffee, or dress it up with homemade whipped cream!

Ingredients

For the Cake

  • 1 cup butter melted
  • 1/3 cup black cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 2 eggs large
  • 1/2 cup yogurt full fat
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Chocolate Glaze

  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 4 Tbsp black cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3-4 Tbsp 10% cream as needed

Instructions

For the Cake:

  • Preheat oven to 350 F.
  • Grease a 10-12 cup bundt pan and dust lightly with cocoa powder.
  • In a small pot, melt the butter. Add the water and salt and set aside.
  • In a large bowl, whisk the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, and baking soda.
  • Whisk in the butter mixture, until smooth.
  • Whisk in the eggs, one at a time.
  • Whisk in the yogurt and vanilla extract.
  • Scrape the batter evenly into the bundt pan.
  • Bake for 45 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean.
  • Remove from oven and let cool for 20 minutes on a wire rack.
  • Invert onto a rack and let cool completely.

For the Glaze:

  • Whisk the powdered sugar, cooca, vanilla, and 3 Tbsp of cream together. You may need to add a bit more to get the right consistency. The glaze should be thick but be able to slowly flow down the side of the cake.
  • Once the cake is cool, spoon the glaze over the cake and let it drip slowly down the sides.
  • Serve with a side of whipped cream!
