Meinhilde and I are lucky to live in a neighbourhood that we love. One of its many attributes is that everyone embraces the idea of sharing – neighbours leave goodies on the curb to the first person that can carry it home. I can’t even list how many treasures I’ve picked up, given a good scrub, and found the perfect place for in our apartment.

One sunny Saturday on our way to Wychwood Barns, we spotted a white door on the side of the road. Donatello immediately recognized its potential and decided it was the perfect DIY project for us. We had been looking for months for a headboard, but couldn’t find one that had enough character and was in our price range.

I have to give all credit to Donatello. He had the inspiration and then carried out the entire project on his own. The only thing I did was help him carry the door home. It was really heavy.

He washed and painted the door. He measured it to the correct length and sawed off the smaller panel to fit the bed and make the molding symmetrical.  He even managed to level it and drill it to the wall all by himself.

I love it! In our tiny and overcrowded bedroom, it adds just enough personality to the bed and protects the wall behind it.

Donatello finished it off by installing the continually outsold Ranarp lamp from Ikea in the centre of the wall. We finally have a place to sit up and read in bed!

  1. This post is so perfect for me right now! I just promised my boyfriends sister I would help her make a headboard, yet I have never made one in my life! You gave me the inspiration I needed to actually do it!

  2. That’s great! I’d love to see how it works out!!
