2024 Make Nine

My 2024 Make Nine includes seven garments and two accessories. Now that I have a separate space for my sewing machine, I hope to do more sewing this year. I even added one sewing project to my Make Nine. Three of the projects are scrap-busting, and all are hopefully stash-busting as well!

I’ve got the most lovely shade of forest green yarn, along with the fluffiest mohair skein. I don’t really wear vests, but maybe that will change with this addition to my wardrobe! I think this should be a quick knit, as there are no sleeves, and it is mostly knit in the round. I’m not sure, but I believe that the buttonband is faux!

I love the photos for this sweater! Now that I’ve been knitting for a few years, I have amassed a collection of odds and ends of skeins, along with miniskeins. I am loathe to throw them out, and the Seaglass Sweater is the perfect way to use up all that yarn! The Ravelry project page has beautiful iterations using different palettes, from warm to cool to random. I’ve knit so many yellow sweaters, that I’m pretty sure that I can make a golden Seaglass Sweater for myself!

This sweater has such a mix of textures. It’s knit side to side and requires a DK weight yarn with some drape. The suggested yarn is a blend of BFL and Masham, which will give the finished fabric a bit of shine, a bit of fuzz, and a bit of drape. I’ve got a sweater quantity of 100% Norbouillet yarn from Sweet Paprika Designs (that I’ve previously used in my Tralee Hat and Salal Cardigan) that would be the perfect match.

When we moved into a bigger place last year, I got a small area for my sewing. I am a notorious pin-dropper, and I never felt comfortable sewing (and dropping pins) while my toddler was still putting everything in his mouth. Now I want to get back into sewing in a big way, and pants are on my list! I’ve never sewn pants for myself before, and these wrap, peg-leg style pants looks so comfortable. I have some fuchsia linen in my stash that would be a good match for these pants!

Fairy Snowcap - 2024 Make Nine

A quick, gratifying knit to help break up the endless sweater knitting. I love knitting sweaters, but I also love knitting hats! This hat has a beautiful mix of twisted rib and lace that gives it an almost sculptural quality. I have quite a collection of white wool skeins from local fibre farms, but the details of this hat really sing in white. Living in Canada, we have to wear hats almost every day from November through April, and sporting a beautiful hat can make a dreary day just a little bit more tolerable.

Theia - 2024 Make Nine

Slipped stitches and mohair make this tee a one-of-a-kind knockout. Theia is also a great project for having fun with colour: you could use highly contrasting colours for the main yarn and mohair accent, or more complementary colours. Theia also only uses one or two skeins of mohair yarn, depending on what size you knit.

Populuxe - 2024 Make Nine

Populuxe by Andi Satterlund

This is just a chic cardigan. Andi Satterlund’s patterns are cropped and close-fitting, and I’ve found they don’t really use up that much yarn. I’ve got the perfect yarn (yellow, of course) for this mid-century-modern style cardi. Take a look at our previous Satterlund projects, including Salal Cardigan, Vianne Cardigan, and Tierney Cardigan). Unfortunately this pattern is no longer available.

Gartrell Crew - 2024 Make Nine

Gartrell Crew by Tanis Lavalee

I knit a Gartrell Crew for Kenji last year, and want one for myself. The Gartrell Crew was on my 2023 Make Nine list but I never got around to casting it on. Something about all those stripes makes me smile. I have the perfect yarn for this, six skeins in different colours but on the same base. I just need to find that yarn!

Color Palette Socks - 2024 Make Nine

Color Palette Socks by Laura Moorats

These socks are also scrap-busting. And the colours for the two socks don’t have to match, either! Just like some of the scrap-busting projects above, you can use mini skeins or leftover odds and ends of sock-weight yarn. To keep the socks looking neat, I would just make sure that the decorative ribs, toes, heels, and cuffs use the same colour yarn.

What’s on your 2024 Make Nine list?

  1. Make nine sounds very doable to me. My year list is always way more than is achievable, but a Maker has to dream. Seaglass is a sweater I have been looking at for some time, I like that it uses ‘what one has.’

  2. I highly recommend Sea Glass! Your other choices look great as well.

    1. Glad to hear your recommendation! I want to start organizing my scraps to start with this 🙂

  3. Love the fairy snowcap.
Thanks so much for participating and sharing at SSPS 294. See you again next week!

  4. I’ve never thought of making a list of things I want to make, I more or less just do what I feel. I really need some yarn busting patterns though, I have so many odd rolls. I may do a ton of granny squares and see where it leads me. I love your choices but I have to say, the socks are really calling to me.

    1. I’m not strict about my list…last year I didn’t make a few of the patterns I included. And there are always new patterns that speak to me throughout the year! I also love knitting summer tops in linen, but it’s hard to think about warm weather in January 🙂
I’m really trying to use up my scraps and stash though, I guess that’s the ultimate goal!
