Small Apartments: Meinhilde’s After Bathroom

In April 2013, I moved into my own apartment. Through luck and the help of family, I was able to get this small apartment in a house over 100 years old, renovated.

The Bathroom

First, have a gander at the before photo.

Now take a look at the after photos!

Here’s what I did to transform this teeny-tiny space on a budget:

  • All the walls were painted Simply White (Benjamin Moore)…
  • I installed a mirrored medicine cabinet from Ikea over the sink…
  • Added an under-sink cabinet, also from Ikea, with custom knobs and legs…
  • Installed a new light fixture over the medicine cabinet…
  • Switched the toilet paper holder with a stainless steel one from Umbra (a gift)…
  • Replaced the towel rods and hooks on the back of the door…
  • And attached a new soap dish⁄toothbrush holder from Ikea…
  • Lastly, I added a shelf above the door to store extra towels and toilet paper, also from…Ikea….
  • Then I accessorized it with a couple green bath mats, one from Target, the other from Bed Bath and Beyond…
  • I sewed a curtain out of hedgehog fabric for the small window…
  • And the piece de resistance, my Marimekko shower curtain!

You  may have not noticed, but the plants I have in there are fake. I tried keeping a few shade-loving tropical plants in the bathroom (so they’ll appreciate the humidity, right?), but they almost died on me. So in with the not-real, until I can figure out which plants like ultra low light!

Check back soon for photos of:

  • the before and after of the bedroom
  • the before and after of the kitchen
  • the before and after of the living room
  • and the before and after of the hallway!

  2. You could try philodendron scandens in your bathroom. They are cheap and you can take them off the soil and leave them in water. I have them all over the house and they do great – in water, not soil. Haven’t figured out the biology behind that yet :).

    1. Thanks for the suggestion – I’ll definitely try them out!

  3. […] adult, I moved into my own apartment (you can see the before and after pictures of my bedroom, bathroom and kitchen here). Needless to say, I had to do a bit of scrounging and shopping. The items listed […]
