Small Apartments: Meinhilde’s Before Bathroom

In April 2013, I moved into my own apartment. Through luck and the help of family, I was able to get this small apartment in a house over 100 years old, renovated.

The Bathroom

The bathroom was the only room that was still functional where nothing got done, other than adding a lick of paint and installing shelving. The tiles are old and splattered with some paint from previous tenants, but adding accessories really brightens up the space. And the whole room is just under 35 square feet, to boot.

Meinhilde's Before Bathroom, Kiku Corner

The girl who lived here before me painted one wall a dark pink. It wasn’t a bad colour, but I thought the bathroom was a bit too small for such a dark hue… plus, I wanted to accessorize it with green and orange. The mirror on the wall is actually a built-in medicine cabinet that was installed between the studs of the wall, and it was the only storage space in the whole room. It`s quite a dark space, since there is no overhead light, just a panel of three lightbulbs over the sink. Luckily it has a window, albeit a small one. Which looks onto a brick wall across a driveway.

Our contractor said the sink is quite old,  since it has so much character that you don’t see in many modern sinks. There is a plastic tub/shower insert that was relatively new, so it stayed. The window is quite old and doesn’t stay shut when it’s really cold outside, but there are no plans to replace it yet. I’ll just have to suck it up.
