I knit the Remi Cardigan, a free pattern by Claudia Q for EweKnit Toronto. EweKnit is one of our favourite Toronto yarn stores, and they publish many free patterns! This cardigan pattern is available in six sizes, from 0-3 months to Child 4. For my cardigan, I knit the 0-3 month size using leftover Koigu yarn from my stash.

You might recognize this yellow yarn from my own Lyngen sweater, which I knit a few years ago. In total, I used 1.75 skeins of the yellow Koigu KPPPM, and just 0.2 skeins of the blue as contrast. Koigu is a lovely yarn, as it’s a 100% merino fingering-weight yarn. I love the vibrant colours and the variety of shades in each skein. Oddly enough, the gold and blue are the colours of my high school back in Riyadh! When choosing two colours, ensure that the values are different. The lighter yellow nicely contrasts with the dark blue, for instance.

The pattern originally calls for ombre-dyed yarn. If you use that kind of yarn, you’ll need to be careful about splitting the yarn so the sleeves have the same gradient as the body.

The Remi Cardigan is a simple little top-down sweater sized for babies and kids. It has a simple colourwork yoke, which was the trickiest part for me. Even though I’ve knit lots of stranded colourwork before, this was knit flat instead of in the round. That meant that I had to purl the stranded colourwork. Thankfully, the pattern only uses two colours in an easy repeat, so I was able to manage. I will definitely think twice about doing stranded purling over a whole adult-sized sweater though!

Due to my loose gauge, I used 2.5 mm needles instead of the recommended 3.25 mm ones. The top-down construction has raglan sleeves and you knit the body flat. You then pick up stitches for the sleeves and knit in the round. After you knit the body, you knit the buttonband and neckband in garter stitch. I made 11 buttonholes, but because the only buttons in my stash were rather large, I only sewed on six buttons.
