Alpagas Charlevoix

Alpagas Charlevoix is an alpaca farm and fibre store in the Charlevoix region of Quebec. Charlevoix is one of Quebec’s most inventive regions for agrotourism.  The landscape includes green, rolling hills dotted with trees; fjords; headlands; and bays; hugs the St. Lawrence River and is a designated a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.

Tomiko and I were driving on highway 362 along the St. Lawrence River when we came across a field of fluffy alpacas! We turned around and backtracked to Alpagas Charlevoix, where we passed dozens of cute alpacas in various fields on the property as we made our way into the barn shop. Here we found gorgeous and soft woven scarves, knitted hats, and skeins and skeins of luxurious wool. Being an avid crocheter (and wannabe knitter) I bought two skeins of soft grey and white wool. It was pricy but well worth it; I would much rather prefer to buy yarn straight from the grower and spinner than from any old yarn shop. The exquisite woven scarves made me want to start taking up weaving; the greyscale patterns were beautiful enough to be found in any Montreal boutique.

Alpacas are shorn in the spring, which gives them enough time to grow their coats again for the brutal winters. Here, you can see the freshly shorn cuties that keep fluffy legs and a fluffy head. Their haircuts make them look so silly! The onsite shop sells roving; yarn; alpaca skins; and knitted, crocheted, and woven accessories, but the farm also sells the alpacas themselves!

I bought a 110g skein of natural white yarn that is 75% alpaca, 15% merino, and 10% nylon; this yarn is soft and will make a warm scarf or hat for this winter. The other skein is 90g of a blend of 90% alpaca and 10% merino in a soft dove grey. I have started to amass crochet books from the library again as I hunt for the perfect pattern to make.
