Poutineville is a Montreal poutine chain that recently opened in Toronto, and Ryan and I met some high school friends there for dinner one night.

Poutine is a Quebecois treat of french fries covered in gravy and squeaky fresh cheese curds. The hot gravy melts the cheese and soaks into the fries and creates a delicious mess. Poutine is only a recent player in Toronto; I remember less than ten years ago, I just saw poutine on menus in Quebec, the next province over. Now, even McDonald’s in Ontario sells it!

Ryan is a poutine-lover. Now that there are two poutineries near my apartment, so he’ll have to walk the poutine gauntlet every time he visits. This late-night drunk food has risen to new heights, as you can get different toppings along with the regular gravy and cheese, including guacamole, lobster, perogies, chili, and foie gras. At Poutineville, Ryan had poutine with beef, and I had poutine with mushrooms, onions and a fried egg. They offered four or five different choices of fries, four or five different types of gravy, and several types of cheese. You can mix and match to your heart`s content!

Karlos even told us about something called the Poutine Challenge: when in Quebec, you must eat a serving of poutine before eating anything else. Fancy an apple? Poutine first. Want a salad? Poutine first. Sounds like a recipe for a heart attack! No, wait, they offer that too…
