The Doe Ears Headband is the second pattern featured here on Kiku Corner from Lavanya Patricella. It is a beautifully small project to practice your beginner’s brioche skills.
Brioche might be daunting at first, but this pattern lets you start slowly. I admit that I frogged the headband multiple times, but this didn’t set me back too far. The headband is knit side to side with a maximum of 19 stitches across, so mistakes are quickly obvious. I’d rather restart a piece with only nine stitches at cast on than set up a hat and find my mistake after a number of rows.
The finishing piece is a separate and small decorative band that hides the seamed edges. It can be worn at the front or back of your head, depending on your personal style and daily hairdo. The final piece measurers 9cm by 22cm when laid flat.
Materials and tools
This Doe Ears Headband uses Julie Asselin Leizu DK, a merino silk mix with lovely tonal colours. I bought this yarn at the closing sale of the Purple Purl a few years ago. The skeins were partially used, so a smaller project let me use up the remaining yarn in colourways Voilier (the lighter) and Alpin (the darker). All together, it requires under 100m of either DK or worsted yarn, so it is great for stash busting. I used a 2.75mm / US 2 needle for this DK yarn.
