I’ve created a roundup of some beautiful free linen knitting patterns. Of course, you can always browse the massive archive of free patterns on Ravelry to find more free linen knitting patterns. Many of these patterns are by established designers, so they shouldn’t have errors and should be well written. However, I have not tested them, so always check for errata to prevent future headaches!

Trying out a designer’s free pattern is a good way to get to know how the designer writes, so if you like his or her instructions and methods, you might feel more comfortable purchasing another pattern of theirs. Also, it is really easy to buy patterns on Ravelry!

Some of these patterns call for yarns that are a blend of linen with other plant fibres. However, as these are all warm weather tops, they would feel lovely in 100% linen as well. Durable linen creates a fabric that softens with each wash, ensuring you’ll only love these garments more with each wear!

187-13 Adele Cardigan by DROPS Design

The Adele Cardigan pattern, like most DROPS designs, comes in sixteen languages. This cardigan has a crew neck and is worked flat. It seems like a plain cardigan, but it has a beautiful lace border on the hem and cuffs. The pattern comes in six sizes, from a bust of 88 cm / 34.5″ up to 138 cm / 54.3.” The cardigan calls for 958 – 1437 m of DROPS Belle, a DK weight yarn in a cotton/rayon/linen blend. However, I’m sure a 100% linen would work beautifully too, as long as you get gauge.

Everett by Amanda Keep Williams

The Everett top is a simple stockinette top worked in a drapey yarn. A button flap at the shoulder adds interest, and is the perfect way to showcase some special buttons! The pattern calls for 550 – 1010 m of worsted weight yarn in a rayon/linen/silk/nylon blend. I think that this top would look wonderful made in some of those chainette linen yarns. The top comes in six sizes, from a bust of 33″ to 53″.

Ein Tag am Meer by Corinna Tengler

The Ein Tag am Meer tee, which means A Day at the Sea in German, is knitted in one piece and in round from bottom up. Due to its simple knitting pattern the Ein Tag am Meer is also great for beginners. The light and airy oversize cut and the loosely falling batwing sleeves ensure a summery appearance. The pattern calls for 1200 – 1440 m of DROPS Belle, a DK weight yarn in a cotton/rayon/linen blend. However, I’m sure this would also look beautiful in a 100% linen yarn. The pattern comes in six sizes, from a bust of 94 cm / 37″ to 156 cm / 61.5.”

Ravine by Universal Yarn

The Ravine tee is lightweight, colorful, and easy-to-wear. Playful stripes in different widths add interest to this otherwise simple top. Ravine is worked flat in pieces from the bottom up and seamed, adding structure to give this top the longevity to wear for years. Ravine comes in nine sizes, from a bust of 86.5 cm / 34″ to 167.6 cm / 66″. It calls for 700 – 1540 m of sport weight linen/cotton blend yarn. However, I’m sure a 100% linen would work wonderfully too.

The Butterfly Heart Top has been in my own Ravelry library for ages. I love the central lace motif on this breezy tank! This top comes in six sizes, from a bust of 84 cm / 33″ to 140 cm / 55.” It calls for 480 – 1440 m of DROPS Belle, a DK weight cotton/rayon/linen blend yarn.

Fifteen Love by Brittany Wilson

Fifteen Love by Brittany Wilson is from the Spring and Summer 2014 issue of Knitty Magazine. It calls for 988 – 2222 m of sport weight 100% linen yarn. The pattern includes seven sizes, from a bust of 71 cm / 28″ to 131.5 cm / 51.75.” Fifteen Love has all the elements of a successful summer garment; a lightweight summery yarn, bright and cheery colors, and a fit that is both active and flirty. The simple silhouette is timeless and changing the colour palette will make it your own. The sweater is worked top down, starting with the front, then stitches are picked up along the shoulders to work the back. The stripes are intarsia, but the pattern is simple enough that a chart isn’t needed.

Lynn by Irene Rasch

The Lynn t-shirt is long and is knit from sleeve to sleeve. The length lets you wear this t-shirt as either a t-shirt or a tunic that can be work, e.g., over your bathing suit on a trip to the beach. It calls for 450 – 600 m of sport weight rayon/linen/cotton blend yarn. It comes in just three sizes, from a bust of 100 cm / 39.4″ to 120 cm / 47.2″.

Katherina by Berroco Design Team

Katherina is a light and breezy top. You knit the back and front bodices side-to-side and then sew them together. Afterwards, stitches are picked up and worked down to form the body. The tee comes in eight sizes, from a bust of 71 cm / 28″ to 142 cm / 56″. It calls for 625 – 1375 m of DK weight linen/cotton blend yarn.

Homestead Tank by Aubrey P Busek

The Homestead Tank by Aubrey P Busek for Universal Yarns is an airy top with an allover checkerboard texture and delicate lace diamonds. It comes in four sizes, from a bust of 97 cm / 38.25″ to174.5 cm / 68.75″. It calls for 625 – 1250 m of 100% linen DK weight yarn. You knit this top flat in pieces and then seam it together. A three-needle bind-off joins the shoulders, which will add structure and strength to the garment. After seaming, you pick up stitches for the button bands. Lastly, you attach the buttons. The buttons along the center back create a contemporary vibe for a classic design.
