DIY: Yellow Taylor Hat with Bow by EweKnit Toronto

The Yellow Taylor Hat is from North 40: Baby Sweaters and Accessories Vol. 1, a book by one of our favourite Toronto yarn stores, Eweknit. Published in 2019, this book features 25 extremely cute patterns of baby/toddler accessories and sweaters. This is my first Eweknit pattern, but Meinhilde has already made a few others here. The Taylor Hat is a bottom-up hat with a bit of smocking at the brim. This smocking not only adds some visual interest, but it helps keep the brim from stretching out, even after being pulled off multiple times!

The original pattern for the Yellow Taylor Hat features a pompom on top. This version is for one of Kenji’s friends, who has a full head of beautiful curly hair. She often wears little bows to keep the hair out of her face. Those bows inspired me to add a knit bow instead of a pompom for this hat.

I found the instructions for a small bow by searching in Ravelry’s extensive library with “bow” as a keyword and filtering for free patterns. I scrolled through the photos and found the shape and size of the bow that would complement the hat. Overall, I found that this bow was simple enough to act as a feature without detracting from the stitch pattern. The pattern for this bow is called A Beret with a Bow.

The yarn for this adorable hat is Rooster Almerino DK. It contains a blend of alpaca and merino, just like the name suggests. This makes the yarn very soft and therefore a comfortable hat for a baby’s brand new skin. The colour used is 210 Custard, a rich and happy yellow. One ball of this yarn contains 125 yards/ 114 metres. Thankfully, this was just enough yarn to make the hat and the bow, but with some to spare to sew the bow on.

We’ve used this yarn before; check out the examples below:

The size for this Yellow Taylor Hat is 6-18 months. In these photos, Kenji is 10 months with a head circumference of 45.5cm (18 in). So I think I made the correct sizing for this winter only! To make this size, I used 4.0 mm (US 6) circular needles and then the same in dpn. Measured flat, the finished hat is 17 cm (6.5 in) across and 16 cm (6.25 in) tall. However, the pattern includes sizes from newborn up to four years.

This hat is part of the North 40 book by EweKnit, but it only appears in the pdf version. If you have the book and want to knit this hat, contact EweKnit and they’ll send you the pdf.
