Butterick B6351 in a lemon print cotton is a perfect dress for spring and summer!

I won this lemon-print cotton sateen from a giveaway partnership between Telio and Emily Hallman Designs on Instagram. The happy yellow lemons, white blossoms, and green leaves are on a dark navy background. I’ve seen this fabric in several other sewing projects by sewists, but other local boutiques have used it too!

I wanted to use this beautiful print in a dress that didn’t chop up the pattern, so I decided to use B6351. The pattern has multiple cup sizes included, so no need to do an FBA!

I made size 18 with C cup bust. I ended up taking in darts in the shoulders and taking in the side seams by 1/2 cm each side, so I suppose I could have done a size 16 instead. Is my shoulder dart adjustment really a square shoulder adjustment? I’ve had to do that on a couple other tops (and ready made tops), so I might include it on my next sewing project to see how it fits.

I sewed B6351 in view C, but shortened it by quite a bit. I’m 170 cm / 5’7″ and I chopped off about 15 cm so that it would fall at knee-length. I liked the A-line skirt (sewn from four panels) but I didn’t bother to pattern-match.

I added side seam pockets, and sewed buttons to secure the back. Because of the stretchy back waist, I ended up not needing to sew buttonholes and instead just sewed the buttons as a decorative feature. Since the back flaps are only secured with two buttons at the neckline, it tends to blow open. This adds a lot of cooling when it’s hot, but exposes my bra band. Perhaps I can sew it shut? I think because the back is quite loose, I think the back armscyes don’t quite fit. I’m not sure how to fix it for next time. maybe if I overlap the back flaps a touch more, it’ll be fixed.

I used a black cotton voile for the bodice lining. The fabric I got is very light and sheer, so it’s only suitable for lining. I wanted a light, breathable lining fabric for the dresses and skirts I sew, and it turned out perfectly.

I have enough leftover fabric for a top. Any suggestions? Perhaps another Simplicity 8061?

This dress is a bit rumpled because I already wore it before taking photos!

  8. Love this look. Great fabric choice! The back arms eye looks good in the photos. I’m sewing this right now and struggling through the back waistband/casing. Checking all reviews for tips. Any and all are appreciated!

    1. What part of the casing are you struggling with? The part at the sides? I had to do some hand-sewing there to make sure the elastic was encased but not peeking through.

  9. Hi, I am also really struggling to understand the casing instructions. I am not sure where the second casing goes. I also don’t understand the sideseam instruction. What is the difference between the casing and the facing? I would be very grateful to hear how you did it.

    1. It’s been a few years so I honestly don’t really remember, sorry! What I do remember, though, is that the instructions were tricky and I just kind of fudged it? There’s a casing in the back skirt to put the elastic, and the sides get secured in the side seams so the elastic stays put. Sorry, but I hope this helps!

  10. Hi! Your dress turned out perfectly! I am confused eith steps 11 through 15 for b6351 pattern D, (it’s steps 13 through 17 for patterns A,B,C)
