The Boyfriend Hat by Sidsel Sangild uses single crochet and half double crochet stitches to make 5 wedges – these are joined with slip stitches to form a beautiful watchcap hat. The rim flips up to form the rim of the hat and makes it warm and snug around the ears.

To make this hat, I used Cascade Longwood Sport in the ketchup colourway. This hat uses just one skein!

Cascade Longwood Sport is obviously a sport weight yarn, and it is a lovely, bouncy 100% merino yarn. I used it once before, to make the Moss Stitch Cardigan, and I loved crocheting with it. To make this hat, though, I used a 3.00 mm hook. The pattern recommends you to leave a long tail when binding off, and I can attest that this is very important! You use these long tails to slip stitch the wedges together. The five sections of the hat are easy to crochet, and the pattern is easy to remember. I was able to work on this on my commute every day. Since the pieces are small, the Boyfriend Hat project is easy to tote around.

The Boyfriend Hat is so named because the creator found this was a hat her boyfriend was willing to wear! It doesn’t look obviously like crochet, and the crown has a beautiful pattern. It’s just a good, plain, basic hat!
