Jade Usackas is an Ontarian artist who crafts beautiful pieces that make social commentaries on matters she is passionate about.

I first noticed Jade’s works of art with her striking collection called Godspeed Mother Nature. Mounted on little plaques, miniature candy coloured animal heads hang off of chains dangling with gold rifles. Now, there are countless pieces of jewelry in the world with cutesy little animals, but these pieces are different. Dodos, Caspian tigers, mountain gorillas… a mixture of exotic and dangerous animals, and most importantly endangered or extinct ones.  Jade asks, why do we only pay reverence to these animals once it is too late? Exactly.

These beautiful but peculiar rings are part of the collection called My Father’s Teeth, relating to Jade’s relationship with her father. She studies how traits and values are passed through families. They caught my eye because they look so much like real teeth, don’t they? The small cream one with the wide gold band reminds me of the tooth I had pulled out when I was young!
