Pig Roast at the Queen City Yacht Club, Kiku Corner

Our aunt invited us to the annual pig roast, hosted by the Queen City Yacht Club on Toronto Island. The event is held  every Labour Day weekend, but Ryan and I didn’t go last year because we spent the weekend at Sauble Beach with friends. We were happy to attend this year, though!

There were two massive pigs, encased in chainlink fence and secured to the mechanical spits. The roasters had shifts to monitor the pigs overnight watch out for spits that got stuck (or hungry animals and people?). The spit was sheltered by a tent in case it rained, and set up on the lawn next to the Queen City Yacht Club clubhouse. The day before the scheduled pig roast, Queen City members would stake out their tables and chairs to accommodate themselves and their guests and friends. Then things got fancy: groups set out cloth tablecloths, real glassware, candlesticks and even armchairs. The fancier tables looked like they belonged in a proper dining room.

Before the dinner started, we were able to watch the annual air show put on for the Canadian National Exhibition. We had a great view of the jets over the lake!

There was also a real working canon that was fired to signal the start of dinner. The only thing was…the cannon was about 50cm long.

On the menu:

– roast pork

– pork cracklin’

– juicy and sweet corn on the cob

– baked potatoes

– Caesar salad

– rolls

– tomato and onion salad

The pig roast wasn’t just a barbecue: there was a ukelele concert, Crazy Croquet earlier in the afternoon, and speeches. Then came the sound of the cannon and then the food and drink could be served!
