In grade 5, my best friend in Saudi Arabia was Finnish and she introduced me to Marimekko. We moved to Riyadh the same year, were in the same grade 5 class, and even lived on the same compound, just around the corner from each other. When I would visit her, we would make popcorn and iced tea and watch one of her two English VHS tapes: Casper the Friendly Ghost or Men in Black.
She moved back to Finland after only two years, but we’ve still kept in touch. I visited her and her husband a couple years ago, and fell in love with the Finnish design company Marimekko. Needless to say, I visited every single store in Helsinki. I even discovered that one particular location even had offcuts of the fabric for a discount.
As my Finnish friend knows, I love Marimekko. The designs are so vibrant and punchy, and those designs are used in clothing, dishes, and beautiful beautiful fabric. I loaded up on Marimekko items, including dishes, my shower curtain, bedding, tea towels, pillowcases, oven mitts…the list goes on!
