I knit the Braided Brim Hat by Jack Johnson for our Etsy shop. An Etsy customer commissioned three hats from us. All of her hats had different construction methods, which made it fun to knit for us! The Braided Brim Hat was her second hat (check out her pink speckled Constellate Hat). She requested a warm red colour, and after I sent her photos of red worsted-weight yarns from our stash, she decided on this beautiful hand-dyed yarn.

The Braided Brim Hat uses one skein of worsted weight yarn. I used one skein of Emily C Gillies Merino Worsted in the Carmine colourway. You can buy Emily Gillies’ yarn at Yarns Untangled here in Toronto (in Kensington Market!). Merino Worsted is a smooth worsted weight wool with great stitch definition. It also has great depth of colour, so the hat isn’t a solid red. Emily Gillies’ yarn knits up beautifully and is great for quick hats, mitts, scarfs, and heavier weight sweaters. Emily hand-dyes this Canadian-made yarn in Toronto!

The construction of the Braided Brim Hat was very new to me. The instructions have you knit three garter stitch strips, which you then braid together. Each strip has live stitches that you will then knit to form the crown. I know how to braid (I braid my hair almost every day!), but the instructions to braid these strips were not very clear. Instead, I had Tomiko help with the braid so that the live stitches aligned nicely. Then, you knit the crown of the hat the round with decreases every second round. However, despite the challenging instructions, the actual knitting was quick, as the whole hat uses garter stitch.

Our customer found this hat on Ravelry herself and requested that we make it for her. The garter strip braid give this hat a somewhat turban look, which we love! This is also an interesting way to add a cabled look without actually knitting cables. The triple layer of braided strips also ensures that the hat will be warm, especially around the ears. The garter stitch is also really squishy and cozy!
