DIY: Pink Fidra Hat by Gudrun Johnston

This is the second Fidra Hat on the blog. Meinhilde suggested I knit one of them after I finished my featherweight cardigan. It acted as a great palate cleanser after the long process of knitting my first piece of clothing. She made a white hat, but here is my pink Fidra Hat.

Even for me, a slow knitter, this was a quick and satisfying knit. I made the pink Fidra Hat so quickly, that I made another one immediately afterwards in white, similar to Meinhilde’s version.

The wool is from Circle R Livestock, called 2018 Bulky. It is hand dyed with madder, which gives it a lovely pink hue. The wool is bulky single ply which self stripes for this hat pattern. I purchased this local yarn from the 2019 Landmade event hosted by the Upper Canada Fibreshed.

You can make the Fidra Hat with or without a pom pom. For this version, I decided not to make one. However, I will wear it this winter and decide if I want to attach a pom. Luckily I have enough yarn left over to make one.

This pink Fidra Hat used 5.0 and 5.5 mm (US 8 and 9) sized circular needles. The pattern has a detailed chart for the lace design but it is not difficult. As with the best designs (at least in my opinion), the stitch chart has a logical flow that becomes easy to navigate once you recognize the repeating design. If you don’t like following charts, the updated pattern also has written instructions. That makes it perfect for those who prefer written instructions or those who use screen readers.

The brim starts with a twisted rib. Then the body of the pattern starts with stockinette, garter stitch, and a bit of decorative lace.

The pattern has just one adult size, but you could adapt it for smaller heads by using thinner yarn and smaller needles. As written, the Fidra Hat calls for just 150 m of bulky weight yarn. It is a perfect project for that special bulky skein from your stash!
