The Tender scarf is a great travel project. I started this piece on my trip to Colombia during Donatello and my vacation last December. It is easy to memorize and uses just one skein of light fingering wool. It is also a free Ravelry download.

The yarn is a soft and silky skein from CréartLaine’s Montana collection. It is 65% merino wool, 20% silk, and 15% yak. I purchased it at the One of A Kind show last December and I wanted to start knitting with it immediately. The yarn is a beautiful tonal turquoise and has a sheen from the silk content.

The Tender scarf pattern is by maanel, who has a bunch of free patterns on Ravelry. It uses a simple lace pattern that is easy to memorize and only requires tracking one’s row number. I use a knitting row counter, but you can also just tally rows on a piece of paper.

The pattern suggest that approximately 550 metres of yarn is required. My skein had only 480 metres, so I made the pattern one repeat narrower. It was an easy adjustment. I then knit the scarf until the skein was almost finished and used up all of it.

This Tender scarf was knit with a 2.75 mm needle, which is a 0.5 mm size smaller than recommended in the pattern. I have a very loose gauge and always need to size down my needles. It created a narrower scarf, but since it is quite long, it can be wrapped twice around my neck. It can be worn both for warmth because of its fibre content and for style because of its beauty.
