DIY Pink Entrelac Headband

This pink entrelac headband is called Grey Gardens,  written by Kate Burge and Rachel Price for Knitty. The original pattern uses worsted weight yarn but I swapped it for a finer yarn.

The yarn is The Dye Guy Socky-Talky™ in Rose of Sharon.  I picked it up last summer from  The Fibre Garden in Jordan, Ontario. I selected this yarn because it is 80% Superwash Merino and 20% Nylon. The nylon gives some extra strength to the wool and I wanted a durable material because I intend to wear this accessory all winter. Also, the pink tonal yarn look beautiful in this entrelac pattern.

The original pattern for Knitty’s entrelac headband uses a heavier weight wool and larger needle so I made some adaptations. I used a smaller size of circular needles (US 1½ – 2.5 mm) but cast on the same number of stitches. Since I wanted the headband to be narrower than the original pattern (I have a small head), the same number of stitches was appropriate.

This is a fun pattern to knit and the entrelac method is a new skill I was excited to learn. I took it on vacation to Italy in October and it was the perfect small project to carry around. Once I memorized the entrelac technique, the pattern was easy to pick up and put down in between my pizza slices.

I ended up having a lot of yarn left over after this small accessory and decided to make a matching pair of fingerless mitts. Stay tuned for them!
