The Multiplicity Buttoned Crocheted Shawl is a beautiful shawl I crocheted using a pattern from Esther over at Make My Day Creative.

I used a rich red alpaca yarn that Donatello brought back from Colombia. The yarn came on a big cone, so I’m not exactly sure how much yarn I used, but the pattern calls for about 400 m for the shawl. The alpaca wool has a beautiful drape to it but seems to keep the shape of the lace quite well. The photos here are of the shawl, unblocked.

I love how there are so many ways to wear this pretty and warm shawl, just go over to Make My Day Creative to see how she wears it. The shawl was quick to crochet, and quite easy too, using only single and double crochets to make the fans and buttonhole borders. Since you start with the long end of the trapezoidal shawl, each row gets progressively shorter and thus faster to work up. For the button edge, I made three rows of half-double crochet in order to give the buttons something more substantial to be sewn onto.

I actually crocheted this back in December/January, but I just got around to picking up the right button last week. I wanted a plain button so that the lace of the crocheted shawl would stand out, and all the sewn buttons give a nice Victorian feel to the shawl. I chose a matte black button with a flat face that was just $0.25 each, and nicely compliments the matte finish of the yarn. Take a look at Make My Day Creative’s shawl, since she used a yarn which has a gorgeous luster along with pearlescent buttons.
