Striped blue and grey fleece lined cowl, Kiku Corner

I designed this super cozy knit striped cowl for Donatello’s first Canadian winter last year. You see, he is from Colombia, a beautiful country with beautiful weather. I had to create something so warm that he wouldn’t feel the cold. I didn’t expect the polar vortex, but at least I created the most toasty winter warmer out there.   The outer layer is a fuzzy knit cowl, while the inside is lined with super soft polar fleece for an extra layer of warmth. The two layers are connected by snap fasteners so that the polar fleece can be detached and thrown in the washing machine.

Pattern

With the circular needle, cast on 104 stitches with the blue wool.

Place a marker and join for working in the round, being careful to not twist the stitches.

Round 1: *K1, p1, repeat from * to end of round.

Repeat Round 1 for seven more rows until piece measures 4cm from the cast on edge.

Round 7: Switch to the grey wool and knit for six rounds.

Round 14: Switch to the blue wool and knit for two rounds.  Repeat the alternation of knitting six rounds of grey, two rounds of blue.

Once there are six grey strips, cast on with the blue wool and *K1, p1, repeat from * to end of round. Repeat this pattern for seven more rounds and bind off loosely at the eighth round in the rib pattern.

The last part is the fleece lining. Hem the two long sides of the fleece rectangle with a 1 cm hem. Sew together the two unhemmed sides to make a tube. Fit the fleece tube with the wrong side out into the knit cowl (it’s good side out). Sew the bottom of one fastener onto the bottom inside edge of the fleece’s wrong side, as in the photo above. Sew the top of the fastener onto the inside edge of the knit side. Sew three more evenly spaced fasteners onto the same edge of the cowl. Sew the remaining four fasteners into the other edge of the cowl.

Trim any remaining threads and turn the piece right side out.
