Happy Hour: Strawberry Vodka, Kiku Corner

Several years ago during one of our summers in Germany, our family made the trip to Amsterdam. We drove to a nearby village and toured a delicious cheese factory. After sampling all the different flavours of havarti and gouda (I remember the nettle gouda was divine), Karlos and I found a table packed with free samples of strawberry wine. I was around 12 years old, and Karlos was around nine. Needless to say, the wine was so sweet that we couldn’t taste the alcohol, and we proceeded to drink ourselves silly. Soon we started to feel nauseated, and then we passed out on the drive back to the hotel. I was off cheese (what a tragedy!) for quite a while afterwards.

Now, this isn’t strawberry wine, but what better way of preserving the essence of summer, the freshly-picked strawberry, than in a liquor that you can sip all year long! Ryan and I recently went berry-picking at Whittamore’s Farm. To use up the many fruits and veggies that we picked, I made a raspberry shrub, a strawberry yogurt Bundt cake, and now this strawberry vodka!

Despite the tantalizing fragrance and pretty pink hue, this strawberry vodka doesn’t have much flavour on its own. Its alluring perfume adds another dimension to mixed drinks, however, so don’t be put off by the taste! The flavoured vodka adds a bit of strawberry aroma when used in a Cape Cod, or you can even add a splash to soda water or gingerale. Since I don’t like carbonated beverages, I’d use this to make a hard pink lemonade or use it to spike iced tea. As you can see, there were a bit too many taste tests of this pink vodka before I could take these photos!

Recipe type: Beverage

Makes 750 mL
Ingredients
  • 575 g fresh strawberries (organic is best)
  • 1 750-mL bottle of plain, cheap vodka
Instructions
  1. Wash, hull, and quarter the strawberries.
  2. Place the strawberries in a 1-L mason jar with a lid.
  3. Pour the vodka over the strawberries. Seal the jar and give it a shake.
  4. Store the jar in a cool, dark space for 7 days. This allows the vodka to suck out all the flavour and colour from the strawberries.
  5. Strain out the strawberries with cheesecloth. Strain again with a coffee filter, to remove any bits and pieces and strawberry hairs.
  6. Store the infused vodka indefinitely and drink responsibly!
