Ingredients
  • 3 Tbsp Hungarian paprika (not hot paprika)
  • 1 Tbsp salt
  • 2 tsp ground black pepper
  • ½ tsp chili flakes
  • ½ tsp dried thyme
  • ¼ cup red wine vinegar
  • ⅓ cup honey
  • 3 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion
  • 1 tomato
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1.5 kg bone-in pork shoulder
Instructions
  1. Mix the paprika, salt, pepper, chili flakes, and thyme in a small bowl.
  2. Mix in the vinegar, honey and olive oil to make a paste.
  3. Peel and slice the onion and place on the bottom of a slow cooker.
  4. Place the pork shoulder on top of the onions.
  5. Pour the spice paste over the pork, making sure to coat it completely.
  6. Chop the tomato and add to the pot.
  7. Tuck the bay leaf into the sauce.
  8. Set the slow cooker to LOW and cook for 8 to 8.5 hours, until the pork is tender and falls apart easily.
  9. Discard the bay leaf. Take the skin and big chunks of fat off the meat and discard. Take out the bone and discard. Shred the meat with about half the sauce.
  10. I made the rest of the sauce into a gravy for poutine.
