This Blue Vaporcloud Shawl is the second of Robbie Laughlin’s patterns we’ve knit here on Kiku Corner, which are both published in his e-book Architexture: Shape and Surface. It is a crescent shawl meant to be knit in a gradient of colours. It also incorporates different stitch patterns and short rows, which make for an interesting knit.
At beginning, I had some issues with the wrap and turn. I hadn’t used short rows in a while and didn’t properly pick up the stitches on the next row. After frogging the first few sections, I restarted and the second time around, the pickups didn’t result in little holes.
Materials and tools
Instead of using multiple skeins to achieve the colour gradient, I used Zen Yarn Garden‘s Superfine Fingering wool in a blue gradient called Misty Morning. It is made from 90% merino and 10% nylon and hand dyed in Canada. The colours and stitch pattern transitions didn’t coordinate exactly, however, it still creates a beautiful finished piece in multiple blue tones.
I used a US 6 – 4.0 mm needle for the whole project. The completed Blue Vaporcloud measures 140cm / 55in by 32cm / 12.5in at its widest.
