The Sidewinder Beanie by Aspen Leaf Knits is a beautiful hat for super bulky yarn!

I used Chill by Sugar Bush Yarns in the colourway Frosty Sea. This is a Super Bulky yarn in 100% merino wool. Frosty Sea is a variegated colourway that includes pastel purples, blues, and beiges. All knit it, it looks like a unicorn colourway! Normally I don’t like variegated yarns because I feel they often make the finished project looks like cat barf! However, because the Sidewinder Beanie uses a Super Bulky yarn, the colours don’t hide the stitch pattern. This would make an excellent winter hat since the merino roving will be very warm. The happy colours will also add some cheer to a dreary winter day!

The hat pattern includes instructions for using both Bulky and Super Bulky yarn. When using Super Bulky yarn, I used just 59 m of yarn. That means I had to use just over one skein of yarn (each of which is 48 m). As the Super Bulky yarn is a single ply of roving, each stitch showcases the colours of the yarn.

The stitch pattern was easy to memorize as there are only 42 stitches per round. After seven rounds of ribbing, the pattern is basically a barber pole spiral of stockinette and seed stitch divided by Right Twists. Then the pattern continues up the crown and through the decreases.

As this hat is a Super Bulky 100% merino wool yarn, it will be very warm! The yarn is plush and fluffly and has a slight halo. I definitely want to knit one for myself this winter. It will give a dose of colourful happiness during months of dark, dreary days!
