I’ve been admiring the Ravine Hat by Woolly Wormhead since before I could knit! I love the 1920s cloche style and thought it would look great in a solid or tonal dyed yarn. The textured, overlapping band adds visual interest. You can wear the hat with the overlap front-and-centre to look like a turban, or to one side for an asymmetrical look.
I found the construction of this hat interesting and fun to knit. You first start with the seed stitch band, knit flat. Short rows and decreases add shaping to keep things interesting. Once you finish the band, you overlap the short edges and join the whole thing in the round. After knitting in the round for a while, you then decrease evenly for the crown.
To knit the Ravine Hat, I used about half a skein of Claremont DK in the Ophelia colourway. This is a 100% BFL yarn dyed by Annie Paaren, an indie dyer from Montreal. Check out some of her yarn here. I love how the tonal yarn looks in seed stitch! After using BFL for the first time in the baby sweater a few weeks ago, I wanted to use it again. It has a lovely drape for 100% wool, as well as a slight sheen. This was one of three skeins of yarn that I bought when Ryan and I visited a local yarn shop in Quebec City two years ago.
The hat pattern comes in five different sizes, and I knit size four using 3.25 mm needles. Overall, I used about 130 m of the Annie Paaren Claremont DK yarn. Since each skein is 232 m, I might have enough yarn to knit a smaller, matching size.
The hat is just one knitted layer, so it’s perfect for a chilly fall day. However, I’m not sure if this hat would be quite warm enough for the depths of a Canadian winter!
