DIY: Beeswax Lotion Bars

These beeswax lotion bars are easy to make and smell amazing! They make your hands feel great without being greasy.

I had found a recipe for homemade lotion bars a while back and made a batch. Unfortunately, they made my hands feel greasy and they took a while to absorb. I think it was the coconut oil. Since then, I’ve been searching for lotion bar recipes without coconut oil, to no avail!

Beeswax Lotion Bars

I first tried using lotion bars last summer. I bought a cute bar that came in its own tin in a yarn shop in Alberta. Those lotion bars were smooth and creamy, and they nicely moisturized my hands for knitting. Surprisingly, they only had two ingredients: soy wax and shea butter. I used that as a starting point for these lotion bars, which use beeswax. Beeswax is very hard, so these bars will keep their shape and not get soft at room temperature. To use, just gently rub them in your hands; your body heat will start to melt them and leave a light coating on your hands.

I like to use shea butter instead of coconut oil because it’s rich and creamy without being greasy. I keep a little dish with a lotion bar on it on a table next to my knitting chair. That way, I can moisturize whenever I need to! I haven’t found that residue from my hands affects the yarn in any way. If anything, it might moisturize my wool yarns!

As I used the golden, unrefined beeswax, my lotion bars have a beautiful honey colour and delicious scent. However, if you prefer plain, just use the white refined beeswax. We get most of our supplies from New Directions Aromatics in Mississauga, but I’ve also used shea butter from hair supply stores and that works great too!

This recipe makes nine bars, each about two tablespoons. Feel free to make larger ones if you have larger moulds. I also listed the ingredient quantities in grams because I had a hard time measuring volumes of soft shea butter and hard chunks of beeswax in my measuring cups. The weight measurements will give you more accurate quantities and more consistent results.

  1. This sounds like a wonderful recipe! I’ll have to give it a try! I love lotion bars, but sometimes they do feel a little greasy. And it’s good to know that they don’t affect the yarn. I crochet and feel like I need to moisturize my hands more often.

  2. These look wonderful and sound amazing! I would love to try them. #MMBC

  3. These sounds just lovely. I like the idea of lotion bars but never thought about making my own.

  4. Those look wonderful. I have been looking for a small gift for the teachers I work with at a small Montessori school. We’ve all been off work since March because of the quarantine and will be back in our classrooms at the end of June. That’s when I want to give them all a little something. This is a great idea!

  5. The soaps look so yummy ? . I love handmade soap. In here mostly coconut oil based. I must check if there is someone sells beeswax based soap ?.

    1. These aren’t soaps, they’re lotion bars! I’m not a soap expert so you’ll have to check to see if beeswax is a good ingredient in soaps 🙂

They look lovely but are too hard. I will remedy and add more shea butter and some vitamin E oil.

    1. Hi Carol – depending on the season you make them, the outside temperature will hardness/softness will be affected. The bars will be harder in the winter and softer in the summer.
