We’d like to introduce our newest crochet pattern, the Berlin Cowl! If you’ve already purchased our Berlin Hat pattern, you can get the Berlin Cowl pattern at 50% off on Ravelry.

We named the Berlin Cowl after the beautiful but gritty city Berlin, which we visited every summer as children. Overall, we found that the Berlin Cowl pattern works best in a tonal-dyed or solid-coloured yarn. Try to avoid variegated or really busy yarns, as the various colours and speckles will hide the beautiful stitch pattern.

The Berlin Cowl pattern uses the same stitch pattern as our first pattern, the Berlin Hat. However, it includes shaping to better fit the neck. This cowl uses worsted weight yarn, creating a dense, warm fabric that will keep you cozy! As we wrote this pattern for worsted weight wool yarn, the cowl will have some structure and can almost stand up on its own. If you prefer a softer cowl with more drape, use a yarn with different fibre, like alpaca. Although I haven’t tried it yet, I’m sure this would be lovely and drapy in silk blends in the summer too.

The Berlin Cowl is crocheted sideways and then seamed. Since crochet isn’t normally stretchy, I tried to mimic the look of knitting using slip stitches. Worked sideways, you can easily adapt the pattern to fit your own head and neck.

To ensure accurate crocheting, we recommend using stitch markers to mark the first and last stitch of each row, and move them up as you complete more rows. This helps you work in the correct row and prevents you from missing stitches.

To celebrate the release of this design, we have a few promotions running. First, we’ll take off 15% on all physical knit and crochet items in our Etsy store for the next two weeks. Also, the pattern will be 15% off on Ravelry with the code Berlin15 for the next two weeks. Lastly, if you purchase or have purchased the Berlin Hat pattern, you can get 50% off the Berlin Cowl pattern. And vice versa. Happy crocheting!
