Knit Baa-ble Hat by Donna Smith

The Baa-ble hat by Donna Smith caught my eye even before I knew how to knit! I purchased the pattern a few months ago and finally got around to knitting it. This was the official pattern for Shetland Wool Week 2015. Shetland Wool Week is an annual event held in Shetland that celebrates Shetland wool and it’s associated crafts.

I used a yarn that I had bought in Iceland in June. I used four colours of Istex Kambgarn that I bought in Iceland last summer: Aqua, Sandshell, Black, and Garden Green. This is a sport weight yarn, and the pattern calls for aran-weight yarn. Lots of reviews stated that the hat comes out larger than stated as the pattern specifies a very tight gauge (to keep out the Shetland wind). I thought this hat would fit me if I used a thinner yarn and knit with my loose gauge, but alas, it was too small! No problem, as it’s now a present for my three-year-old nephew Oliver.

Istex Kambgarn is an imported 100% merino yarn that is worked, dyed, and spun in Iceland. I bought the skeins of yarn, specifically meant for this hat, in a grocery store in Iceland. Whatever you’ve heard about yarn in Iceland is true. Yarn is for sale in yarn shops, grocery stores, gas stations, and the airport! Even though so many things are expensive in Iceland, thankfully the yarn is not!

I knit the Baa-ble Hat using 3.25 mm needles, due to my loose gauge and thinner yarn. The pattern uses stranded colourwork to knit the design. The instructions direct you to knit in the round from the bottom up, and include easy k2tog decreases to shape the crown.
