I used to bake this cinnamon streusel coffee cake when I was in middle and high school. Neighbours on our compound would often come over for a visit and some coffee or tea. My mom liked how I was always eager to bake a treat for them!

When I was a kid and I would read about coffee cakes in American cookbooks, I always thought they were coffee-flavoured. I asked my mom why there wasn’t any coffee flavouring in these cakes. We both grew up with fancy German tortes, many of which had coffee or mocha flavouring. Eventually we realized that when these American recipes talked about ‘coffee cakes,’ they meant cakes that you eat with a cup of coffee, not coffee-flavoured cakes. Very confusing! Now, of course, we can look up almost anything online. Wikipedia denotes the difference based on where the cake comes from. A thirteen-year-old me would have found this very helpful!

Serve this cinnamon streusel coffee cake with tea or coffee, and a big dollop of whipped cream. Ice cream would work nicely as well.

The streusel in this recipe calls for cinnamon and walnuts. You could also substitute chopped almonds or macadamia nuts for the walnuts, and add some ground nutmeg or cardamom.

When you spread the cake batter in the pan, don’t worry if you can’t get it 100% even. The cake will rise a lot in the oven and everything will work itself out. As it’s baking, this cake gives off the most mouth-watering aromas; your kitchen will smell like heaven!
