It’s been a while since we’ve featured any bath products here on Kiku Corner – I think we were too busy knitting! Our old projects are here. This is our newest one: lanolin body balm.

Make Your Own Lanolin Body Balm

The base for this lanolin body balm recipe is coconut oil, with some lanolin and beeswax. The batch is then separated and scented with essential oils. For this batch I made four types: lavender, orange, orange and tea tree oil, and bergamot.

For me, the special touch in this balm is the bit of lanolin. Lanolin is a sticky wax that sheep produce which coats wool. It has waterproofing properties which helps sheep repel water.

  • Add metal rack to pot. Add approximately 2 cm water and bring to a simmer.
  • Add beeswax, coconut oil, and lanolin to glass measuring cup.
  • Set measuring cup on rack in pot with simmering water and leave for approximately 10 minutes or until beeswax has melted.
  • Pour melted mixture into sterilized glass jars.
  • Add 5-10 drops of essential oil and mix with a wooden toothpick. Allow mixture to cool.

  1. Tomiko,

Excuse my ignorance but what is a body balm? Is it like lotion? This sounds like an interesting DIY project. I may save it to try later on if I know precisely how to use it. 🙂 Thanks for sharing on Inspire Me Mondays. Have a boogietastic week! 😉

    1. Yes, it’ll be like a body butter or hand cream, just a bit thicker!

Ingredient list says 4 T. beeswax, directions say 2. Is it really 14 T. Coconut oil? That seems like too much. I would like to try this but want to make sure the amounts are correct. Thank you!!

I would like to use rose water and shea butter instead of coconut oil and distilled water. From your experience would I need to alter the recipe to maintain quality>

    1. We haven’t tested that combo, so unfortunately we don’t know. I suppose you could always try it out and see how it works?

  18. Do you have the recipe formulated in grams and know the ifra recommendation of usage for the essential oils as they all have different dermal limits.
