Ogee and Gosh are a pair of coordinating hats designed by Kiyomi Burgin. The patterns are inspired by motifs created by the resist dyeing technique known as Ikat that is used in textile weaving around the world.

I’m not sure which hat is supposed to be Gosh, and which is Ogee. I guess you can just choose whichever name for whichever hat you want!

You can knit both hats from one skein of each colour of yarn specified in the pattern. I used a lovely maroon and a rich cream 100% alpaca yarn from Alpagas Charlevoix. Tomiko and I had visited the farm on our trip through Quebec a few years ago. When Ryan and I visited Quebec City in September last year, I was happy to see that Alpagas Charlevoix had their own storefront in the old city! This yarn is super soft and has a lovely drape, and since alpaca is warmer than wool these hats are perfect for a Canadian winter!

This first hat I knit as a gift for Ryan’s sister. I like how the brim has two colours and the chevron shape adds some interest. Of course, I also added a detachable pompom.

The second hat has a somewhat simpler design. It uses the reverse colours of the previous hat. This allows the knitter to get two hats out of the two skeins. I found knitting the hats to be quick and easy. The patterns only use two colours, the repeats are easy to memorize, and the decreases are elegant.

The pattern for both Ogee and Gosh hats is available on Ravelry; you get two for one price!

The second hat is available to purchase in our Etsy shop.
