After spending a month knitting my Lyngen sweater, I wanted a quick knit. So, I knit the Deep Woods Toque by Kiyomi Burgin for Needle Leaf Knits. This pattern was originally published in Knitscene Winter 2015, but you can also purchase it on Ravelry.

To knit the hat, I used about 1.1 skein of dark grey Lang Yarns Merino 200 Bébé. I then used a small amount of white and red of the same yarn for the stranded colourwork and accents. The yarn has a slight halo and was a pleasure to work with! The graphic contrast between the dark grey and white is really lovely, and the red brim edge makes the hat a whole lot more interesting. Once I finished, Ryan liked it so much he requested one for himself!

I used a 2.5 mm 16-inch needle for ribbed brim, and 3.0 mm needle for the stranded colourwork. The needles I used made the hat nice and slouchy. This made a rather large hat, so I will have to size down my needles when I make a second hat for Ryan.

Even though this hat is knit in fingering weight yarn, it is very warm and cozy! The stranded colourwork adds another layer of yarn to the crown of the hat. The fold-up brim allows for better fit and extra warmth around the ears! The brim is quite deep, which makes it warm and cozy. I could easily focus on the k1, p1 ribbing on the subway, making this a great hat to knit on the go. Once I finished the brim, the colourwork is very quick.

Using some of the red yarn, I made a small pompom to finish it all off. However, if you aren’t a fan of pompoms, this pompom is fully detachable! This makes the hat quite easy to wash should you ever need to.

The Deep Woods Toque pattern is available on Ravelry.

This Deep Woods Toque is also available to purchase in our Etsy shop.
