My pink Wheat Infinity Scarf is the first knit item I made in twenty years! I used the free Wheat Scarf pattern by Tin Can Knits. This Canadian knitting duo published a whole collection of easy knitting patterns designed for beginners like myself.

I knit my scarf using one skein of Dream in Color Classy yarn in Raspberry Blaze. One skein contains almost 230 m, so I just knit until the yarn ran out. I used 4.5 mm circular needles, as I have a rather loose gauge. Tomiko helped me make it into an infinity scarf by starting with a provisional cast on, and then grafting the finished scarf using Kitchener stitch. Since it was my first knit item, I knew I wouldn’t be able to sell it, so I customized it for myself. I prefer infinity scarves to regular scarves, since I don’t need to mind the ends. I hate when the ends unwind in winter and fall on the floor or drag in the slush. Enter my Wheat infinity scarf! The beautiful tonal pink yarn adds interest to the simple garter and ribbing stitch pattern.

It seems to be such a stereotype for a new knitter to make a scarf. That’s why I put off learning to knit for so long! I have gotten pretty good at crochet and can follow any pattern (and even write my own!), and I didn’t want to start a new craft from scratch. However, there is a reason behind the stereotype. Working on this Wheat infinity scarf allowed me to practice the knit and purl stitches. I found that making a simple shape let me focus on having an even tension for even stitches. And now my hands have the muscle memory to make all those knits and purls!

I never used Dream in Color Classy yarn before, but it was very easy to work with. This is a worsted-weight 100% superfine Australian merino superwash wool yarn. When I blocked the scarf, however, some of the pink colour ran. If you’re planning on doing colourwork, make sure to prewash the wool to prevent dyeing your pattern! I have this yarn in other colours and would love to make a sweater, such as the Cocoa Cardigan by Amanda Scheuzger or the free Sweatshirt Sweater by Purl Soho.

Tin Can Knits also provides a whole host of beginner knitting tutorials, such as casting on, binding off, knitting, purling, and blocking. I already have some of their other beginner (and advanced!) patterns in my Ravelry queue.

  1. I like this as it’s not as bulky as some. More wearable in a warmer climate like ours in the Southwest.

  2. It’s funny because this is the pattern that my local yarn boutique starts the beginning knitters class on – I have one in progress myself. It’s a beautiful pattern for any yarn chosen, and definitely a good one to practice on.
Love how happy you look. It came out great, and I can see how proud you are with it – so awesome! I find myself in a similar position wanting to learn to knit, but being afraid of starting from scratch, and not knowing exactly where to start. I have basic purls and knits down now, and ideas for what I can do with them, but the time required to knit is keeping me away – so much easier, and faster to crochet something, ya know? Ha! Talked your ear off enough. Beautiful job!

    1. Thank you!
I found that it was a great way for my hands to learn the stitches, and how the stitches should look (and to do surgery to fix any mistakes), and now I’m on to knitting colourwork hats and sweaters!

  3. This makes me wish I could knit! I know the basics of crochet but I have never tried knitting.
