I had my eye on the Snow Queen Beret by Brenda K B Anderson for quite a while, and I finally got around to it! The pattern is from the book Crochet Ever After: 18 Crochet Projects Inspired by Classic Fairy Tales. The hat is a beret I crocheted with one skein of Wellington Fibres worsted weight 50% wool 50% mohair yarn I bought at the Woodstock Fleece Festival.

Ever since using a strand of mohair-silk yarn in the linen and lace cardigan, I wanted to try mohair in other projects. The Snow Queen Beret is a perfect match since the mohair adds a bit of a halo to the hat, as well as a lot of warmth; mohair is warmer than wool because all that fluff traps insulating air. Mohair is from the Angora goat, and it has a slight sheen to it which just adds to the icy, winter theme.

I used a 5.0 mm hook and made size Large, although the written pattern has two size options. In order to keep the hat to just one 200 m yarn skein, I eliminated 2 rows of FPdc at the brim. This didn’t make a big difference with the look or fit of the hat, so I will do the same when I make it again.

The snowflake design really pops when made in a pale, tonal icy blue yarn. I’m certain the hat would also look great in a white or off-white yarn as well. In order to keep the feel of the snowflake theme, however, the hat shouldn’t be made in warm colours, although I’d be happy to be proven wrong! Using a variegated or speckled yarn would obscure the snowflake motif, so a solid or tonal yarn is best.

Try out the pattern from the book Crochet Ever After: 18 Crochet Projects Inspired by Classic Fairy Tales. Or, you can purchase the hat directly from our Etsy shop.
