The crochet Cross Creek Hat is from this book Cold Weather Crochet by Marlaina “Marly” Bird.  There are many lattice pattern crochet hats, but this one caught my eye because of the interesting crown and how the top is finished. The author recommends using one skein (about 230 m) of DK weight yarn, so I used Rowan Extra Fine Merino DK in Tomato from our local yarn shop.  I had two skeins of the 125 m DK yarn, which I thought should be fine. Nope, I ran out and had to get another skein to finish off. Also, despite my rather tight gauge, the hat is quite long, especially considering I eliminated two rows in the body lattice pattern! Nevertheless, I love how the lattice really pops and the diamonds and stars of the crown.

I finished the body lattice pattern using front post treble crochet 2 together, and everything seemed fine (although I’ll admit that when I finished the body lattice pattern for the first time, the next row didn’t match up and I realized I had made a mistake several rows down and basically had to frog the entire thing and do it all over again, correctly!). However, when I got to the body diamond pattern portion of the Cross Creek Hat, something else didn’t seem right. So, after doing rounds 1-7 for the first time, I repeated rounds 4-7 twice, as indicated, and then another round of 4, omitted the 5, and went straight to the body diamond pattern. Thus, no two rounds in a row have the front post crochet stitches; they need to be separated by a round of double crochet stitches.

Also, a note states that you must skip a stitch in the current row behind each post stitch made, which I did for the body lattice pattern, and found that everything was fine and dandy. In the body diamond part, again skip a stitch behind the posts crocheted to make the diamond.
