Cactus-Themed Items for Your Home

From what we’ve seen on instagram and pinterest, cactus- and unicorn-themed things are all the rage these days. I haven’t been into unicorns since I was about 8 years old, but cacti are a whole different thing.

Tomiko and I first saw cacti when we visited Arizona around 1993, and we were awed by the towering saguaro cactus. Then we moved to Saudi Arabia and our mom grew cacti in our villa garden, and after a year or so she had a bunch of prickly pear cacti. Our mom would also dry our laundry in the yard; once in a while, the wind would blow over laundry onto the prickly pear cactus. The laundry would then pick up those whisper-thin, razor-sharp needles that would prick us when we would put on those clothing items. It took one or two years for all my clothes to be cactus-free after we moved back to Toronto. I love cacti but I do not miss the pricks!

These adorable coasters are from Coast to Coaster Canada, a shop on Etsy located in Dundas, Ontario. I love the variety of cacti that are decoupaged on the wooden coasters.

 

The Wood Type Shop, located in Vancouver, makes custom marquee signs. This one, a 3D cactus marquee is made of pine plywood with G40 Clear globe bulbs. This would make a great focal piece in a living room or dining room. I know it would fit in mine!

Michu Things sells DIY craft kits, and this kit is for felting your own eight cactus plants. A kit is a great way to get started with a new craft if you’re a bit nervous about diving in. The cactus kit includes wool, eight glass containers, a foam pad, finger protectors, and an instruction manual.

These adorable knit cacti are from Monique Monique Tricot, in Montreal. Alexandra, the shop owner, makes various types of cacti to order in various colours, and with various flower colours. These are a great way to add greenery to your home if you’ve every murdered a real cactus or succulent, like I have.

 

The two pillows above are from A Piece of Bella in our hometown of Toronto. Bella makes linen pillow covers and aprons that are decorated with beautiful designs, but our favourite are the one that have cacti on them. Check out her Etsy shop to see textiles featuring other types of plants and leaves.

 

Lissova Craft, an Etsy store by Tania from Russia, makes these beautiful paper plants cut by hand. These cards feature potted cacti and are good enough to frame and hang as artwork.

 

Lastly, Modcloth has a few lovely dresses with colourful cactus prints. I would buy this dress in a heartbeat, but I’m trying to buy fewer clothes, and any new clothes I get I want them to be handmade (by me!). If only the fabric stores in our neighbourhood had some cactus print fabrics!
