Crochet Puff Stitch Hat The puff stitch hat is made with a body of puff stitches attached to a ribbing made of single crochet stitches. The puffs stitches make the hat quite warm while the ribbing adds a slight stretch for a forgiving fit.

Crochet Puff Stitch Hat with Free Pattern

Supplies

2 skeins aran weight yarn (I used Kumara Classic Elite Yarn that is 85% extra fine merino, and 15% baby camel)

5.5 mm crochet hook

Directions

Ribbing

With the blue yarn, ch 10.

Row 1) Working in the back loops only, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across – 9 sc. Turn.

Rows 2-64) Ch 1; working in back loops only, sc in each ch across, turn.

Fold strip in half and join with sl st along short ends. Do not fasten off. Start the body of the hat.

Body of Hat

Row 1) Ch 1, working in ends of rows across one long edge of the ribbing, work 64 sc evenly around, join with sl st to first sc.

Rows 2-10) (Puff stitch ch 1) in each ch space around. Join with sl st to beginning (32 puffs).

Rows 11) Puff stitch in each ch space around.

Rows 12-17) Puff stitch between each puff in the row below (32 puffs).

Row 18) Puff stitch between every second puff in the row below (16 puffs).

Row 19) Puff stitch between each puff in the row below (16 puffs).

With yarn needle, weave sewing length through sts in last round, gather tightly, tie off.

Weave in ends.

 

Terms

ch – chain

puff – (yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop) three times. Yarn over and pull through all seven loops.

sc – single crochet

  8. I crocheted 74 rows and attached to form a circle, but I don’t understand how to do the next part where it says crochet 64 sc around evenly. I would think that I would have 74 places I could crochet into, and having to skip 10 of them total confuses me.

    1. Hi, thanks for reaching out! I checked over the pattern and I believe you’ve found a typo! It should read ‘crochet 64 rows’ for the ribbing, so that when you sc around you still just have 64 stitches. I’ve corrected thed pattern, thanks for pointing out the mistake!
