I made this crochet aviator hat for my 6-month-old nephew. His dad and grandpa both have their pilot’s licenses, and I thought it would be fun to dress the baby up in a pilot-themed hat!

I bought a worsted weight Red Heart Soft acrylic yarn in chocolate from Michael’s, and when I finished the baby hat, I realized I had enough yarn left to make a matching (but larger) hat for the baby’s dad! For the goggle glass, I used a worsted weight Red Heart Soft in light grey heather acrylic yarn, and selected an off-white bulky acrylic Loops & Threads Charisma yarn for the trim. I have enough leftover white and grey yarns to use for another project…maybe matching mittens?

The goggles are crocheted separately and then sewn onto the body of the hat. The goggle strap is directly crocheted onto the body using a surface slip stitch, so there is no risk of a baby picking off parts of the hat and swallowing them (although a teething baby may want to suck on the earflaps). Other than the surface slip stitch, the hat is just crocheted using single crochet, double crochet, and decrease stitches around a magic ring.

The free crochet pattern, available in several sizes, is from Repeat Crafter Me. I knew our little nephew is rather big for his age, so I made the crochet aviator hat in the size designated for 9-12 month-olds even though he is only six months old. Better too big than too small, I thought, and it fits him well!
