My leather obsession continues with these leather key covers. I wanted to customize our house and apartment keys for future house guests (though our apartment is still too small at the moment but I can dream). I refreshed my embroidery skills by labeling the house key with an ¨H¨and the apartment one with an ¨A.¨ Simple and obvious, even late at night after a few too many glasses of wine.
It’s best to use a thin leather, as it is easier to sew and won’t bulk up bunch of keys. I chose a light brown with black thread and a turquoise with white thread, but there are no limits to the colours or embroidery designs.

Supplies
leather scraps
wax-coated thread
superglue
Tools
leather needle
rotary cutter
leather hole puncher
Directions
- Depending on the size and shape of your key, the size of the leather will be different. Fold piece of leather over the key head to get the base size. Cut piece of leather at least 0.5cm wider and 0.5cm longer than the size of the head to give extra room for stitching.
- Fold leather piece in half and punch hole through both layers over the place of the key hole.
- Using a pencil, lightly mark the H, A, or any other letter on the side of the leather as a guide. Stitch the letter into one or both sides of the cover, as desired.
- Stitch up one side of the leather key cover approximately 2mm from the side. Slide in key and use a pencil to mark the place where the second side of stitching will start. It is important to make the cover slightly tighter, as the leather will stretch with use.
- Stitch up second side and using superglue, dab a small amount of glue to seal in stitches and prevent any unraveling. Allow glue to fully dry before use. Trim off any extra leather if necessary.
What a great idea! Thanks for sharing on the Pleasures of the NW’s DIY party!
I never thought of making a fabric cover for a key. Leather is so durable, it probably just gets better and better looking over time. Great idea! (visiting from #BragAboutIt)
Clever idea! Our house key I can identify quickly because I got a special key cut from a design with our alma mater logo on it, but this would be great for my other keys. Thanks for sharing the idea!
These are great. Easy to identify your keys, but looks awesome! I too am obsessed with leather and happen to have some scraps laying around. Thanks for sharing at the Wednesday Showcase party.
