Toronto Eats: WvrstFor Karlos’ birthday, we went for hot dogs at Wvrst. Karlos is not a picky eater; he has tried everything from grasshoppers and zebra to snow pea shoots and okra. However, there are only a couple of foods that he won’t touch: eggplants, eggs, and until recently, sausages. He will still not eat regular hot dog wieners (because who knows what’s in those), but he has now embraced good quality sausages. Such a good German boy!

Wvrst is based on the traditional German beer hall, so long communal tables dominate the open dining area. Diners order and pay at the counter in the back, take a number and sit down, and wait for the food to be brought to them. The long tables are stocked with ketchup and several types of mustard which nicely complement the sausages.

Wvrst offers dozens of types of sausages, from game sausages (like elk, bison, kangaroo and rabbit); traditional sausages (such as bratwurst, Boerewors, and chorizo); two types of heritage breed pork; turkey; chicken; and three types of vegetarian sausages (two of which are vegan). There is something for everyone!

Wvrst has a mighty beer menu; they offer more than 600 bottled and canned beers and 24  beers and ciders on tap. Karlos got the last bottle of the wood-aged Black Oak Epiphany No. 1, which is no longer being brewed.

We ordered two Duck Fat Fries that each came with two dipping sauces. Of the fifteen types available, we got the scrumptious truffle mushroom mayonnaise; sweet and savoury maple rosemary mayonnaise; sweet and spicy chili tomato jam; and jalapeño cilantro yogurt. The duck fat fries have been voted Now Magazine’s Best Fries in Toronto for two years in a row.Toronto Eats: Wvrst

The seven of us also shared a large platter of Dirty Fries that were topped with peppers, jalapeños and sauteed onions topped and drizzled with Wvrst special sauce.

As for the hot dogs…

Our mom: wild boar sausage topped with sauerkraut and jalapeños

Ryan: duck sausage prepared currywurst-style, cut up and served with curry ketchup and a piece of bread

Donatello: Berkshire honey garlic pork sausage with onions

Tomiko: duck and foie gras sausage with onions and peppers

Meinhilde: black bean sausage with sauteed onions and peppers

And to top it all off, we each had a bite of their soft-serv maple rosemary ice cream topped with crispy duck fat fry bits – absolutely delicious!
