Easy Ideas for Embellishing Hats

Winter in Canada is long and cold, and generally requires wearing a warm hat every day for several months. If you ever get bored of wearing the same ones through the winter, try embellishing hats with with these three easy ideas.

1. Pin on a brooch

We’ve got several brooches so choosing one for a hat can be fun. Here I’ve pinned a sparkly rhinestone and pearl brooch to a white cable crochet beret. You can easily swap in brooches in whimsical shapes – we’ve got sailboats, camels, peacocks, and palm trees. Brooches are great on any type of hat; although we embellished a crocheted hat here, this idea easily works on felt or straw hats without damaging the hat itself.

Tip: pin a small piece of foam to the brooch pin on the inside of the hat; this helps stabilize the brooch and prevents it from getting ‘floppy.’

2. Weave a piece of ribbon through the headband

Here we wove a piece of thin black ribbon through the headband of a turquoise cable crochet beret and tied it with a little bow. You can weave a ribbon through a crocheted or knitted hat, or pin a piece of grosgrain ribbon around the crown of a felt bowler hat to create a hatband.

3. Clip on some flower hair accessories

Depending on the colour of the hair accessories, you can keep the embellishment plain or go for something a bit more eye-catching. The simple cream and blush flower hair clips that I used quite similar in colour to the white cable crochet beret, but you can also use a brighter colour like hot pink. The hair clips easily attach to a knit or crochet hat without damaging the hat itself.
