Studded Jean Jacket, Kiku Corner (1)

For years I searched for the perfect jean jacket. I’m not usually very picky, but for this particular jacket I had a few criteria that were essential. My dream jacket was stretchy, cropped, and fitted. Thrift stores always had thick, stiff denim while other stores sold jackets that weren’t cropped enough or were just too pricey. I finally found my perfect version at Uniqlo in Hong Kong and I jumped at the chance, scooping it up in three colours: blue, black, and white.

With three jackets, I thought it would be fun to embellish one of them. I’m so happy with the result of this DIY, since the jacket is personalized but still acceptable for work (at least on Casual Fridays).  The key for success is the stud placement- try to add them to places that don’t contact your skin or clothes so that the prongs won’t catch onto to anything or poke you.

Supplies

40 dome-shaped 0.5-cm metal studs with prongs

one jean jacket

blue ballpoint pen and spoon

Instructions

  1. Using the pen, mark the spot where each stud will be placed. See below photo for reference. Try to space marks as evenly apart as possible. There are six studs on each breast pocket: three on each side of the button hole, on a slight angle following the seam of the pointed pocket flap. Repeat markings on other pocket. Starting at the outer corner of the right collar, mark two rows of four studs each, followed by one row each of three studs, two studs, and one stud. Repeat on left collar.
  2. Starting with the right pocket, take one stud and poke the prongs over the pen marking through the right side of the fabric, so they are pushed through into the underside of pocket flap. Using the round part of the spoon, bend the prongs inward to close them.
  3. Repeat step 2 with the rest of the prong for the left pocket and both sides of the collar.
